Because this position is composed of many duties and different activities, we feel that a detailed job description should be spelled out so that we can keep the CSS services in focus. The general job priorities, as we now see them, are Department business (see below), Department research activities, and Department teaching activities. The detailed list given below should serve to clarify these general categories and express the CSS's level of involvement in each activity. Clearly, a balance must be eventually struck that will satisfy as many people as possible. This priority listis designed to establish a balance in CSS activities, but not to imply the exclusion of some activities.
1. Maintain and keep operational the Departmental network, accounting,stockroom, secretarial, and staff support computer hardware, software,and support systems.
2. Maintain and update the Department web site and links to other group and individual web sites.
3. Interact with Department personnel to instruct them in the setting up and maintaining of their own web sites as required.
4. Train and update Department support staff with regard to computerand software use.
5. Maintain, organize, support, and update, as required, Department computer facilities.
6. As required, prevent various individual computer facilities from affecting the Department network and computer facilities.
7. Help faculty, students and postdocs use the Department computer hardware, software and network facility in research.
8. Help and advise faculty, students, and postdocs with their research computer hardware, software, network and interfacing problems and questions.
9. Help and advise faculty in the use of computer hardware and associated software for teaching both in and out of the classroom.
10. Help and advise staff and faculty in the computerization of various Department teaching laboratories.
11. Organize training sessions as appropriate to educate Department personnel (faculty, staff, postdocs, students) in the use of computer hardware, software, and networks.
